اللهم اقسم لنا O Allah, apportion for us … meaning make for us مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ … reverential fear of You … meaning fear of you مَا … which … meaning a section and a portion يَحُولُ … will come … i.e. shield and prevent بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ مَعَاصِيكَ … between us and disobedience of You because when the heart is filled with fear, then it refrains from disobedience. ‏”‏ومن طاعتك‏”‏ أي بإعطاء القدرة عليها والتوفيق لها ‏”‏ما تبلغنا‏”‏ بالتشديد أي توصلنا أنت ‏”‏به جنتك‏”‏ أي مع شمولنا برحمتك وليست الطاعة وحدها مبلغة وَمِنْ طَاعَتِكَ And a share of obedience to You … meaning granting the ability to be obedient and then enabling them to actualize that obedience مَا تُبَلِّغُنَا … which shall cause us to obtain … meaning for You to enable us to reach بِهِ جَنَّتَكَ … Your Paradise meaning to include us in Your mercy, for obedience on its own cannot reach it. ‏ ”‏ ومن اليقين‏”‏ أي اليقين بcertainty of You, and that there is no turning back of Your decree, and that nothing afflicts مَا تُهَوِّنُ بِهِ عَلَيْنَا … which shall make easy for us … مُصِيبَاتِ الدُّنْيَا … the afflictions of the world ‏ وَمَتِّعْنَا And allow us to enjoy … بِأَسْمَاعِنَا وَأَبْصَارِنَا وَقُوَّتِنَا … our hearing, and our seeing, and our strength … meaning to use these things in obedience to You. Ibn al-Malik saidو “Enjoying one’s hearing and seeing is that they remain in good function until one’s death.” مَا أَحْيَيْتَنَا … as long as You keep us alive meaning for the duration of our lives. ‏”‏واجعله‏”‏ أي المذكور من الأسماع والأبصار والقوة ‏”‏الوارث‏”‏ وَاجْعَلْهُ And make it i.e. the aforementioned hearing, sight and power الْوَارِثَ the inheritor مِنَّا of us i.e. that it lasts until death. [a detailed ‏ وَاجْعَلْ ثَأْرَنَا And let our vengeance … i.e. the execution of vengeance عَلَى مَنْ ظَلَمَنَا … be upon those who have wronged us i “‏ولا تجعل مصيبتنا في ديننا‏”‏ أي لا تصبنا بما ينقص ديننا من اعتقاد السوء وأكل الحرام والفترة في العبادة وغيرها وَلاَ تَجْعَلْ مُصِيبَتَنَا فِي دِينِنَا And do not make our affliction in our religion وَلاَ تَجْعَلِ الدُّنْيَا أَكْبَرَ هَمِّنَا And do not make this world our greatest concern … meaning do not make the pursuit of wealth and prestige our greatest aspiration or worry; rather, make our greatest objective and concern expending ourselves in doing the deeds of the next life. But there must be some concern for the affairs of this life; that is permitted, rather it is desirable, in fact it is obligatory.o ‏ولا مبلغ علمنا‏”‏ أي غاية علمنا أي لا تجعلنا حيث لا نعلم ولا نتفكر إلا في أمور الدنيا‏.‏ بل اجعلنا متفكرين في أحوال الاَخرة متفحصين من العلوم التي تتعلق بالله تعالى وبالدار الاَخرة، والمبلغ الغاية التي يبلغه الماشي والمحاسب فيقف عنده ‏ وَلاَ مَبْلَغَ عِلْمِنَا … nor the limit of our knowledge i.e. the extent of our knowledge. In other words, do not make us such that we do not know or think of anything besides the matters of this world. Rather, make us those who give deep thought to the matters of the hereafter, seeking out the knowledge concerning Allah and the abode of the hereafter. “‏ولا تسلط علينا من لا يرحمنا‏”‏ أي لا تجعلنا مغلوبين للكفار والظلمة أو لا تجعل الظالمين علينا حاكمين فإن الظالم لا يرحم الرعية‏.‏ وَلاَ تُسَلِّطْ عَلَيْنَا مَنْ لاَ يَرْحَمُنَا ‏ And do not give power over us to those who will not have mercy on us meaning do not let us be overcome by disbelievers or oppressors, or do not place unjust ones as rulers over us, for certainly the wrong-doers do not have mercy to those for whom they arei responsible.
